My First Photoshop Action

I am so gosh darn proud of myself. I figured out how to make an action all by myself with no help from a tutorial or anything. Yay!

I found this great tutorial for making cardboard at Mommy Scraps and just HAD to give it a try. I loved it so much that I wanted to be able to do it over and over again at a click of the button. So, what better way to do that then to learn how to set it up as an action. What's even better then that? Sharing this great action with all of my wonderful blog readers! So...

Did you enjoy the freebies last week? I sure did! I ended up getting just over 1,000 visitors for my Coffee Break downloads. That's pretty neat! Thanx everyone for grabbing my kit and special thanx to everyone who gave me such great comments. You guys are AWESOME!

Unfortunatly, no one has sent me any LO's yet. I did get one from Ginger at http://gingerscraps.blogspot.com/ and you can check it out over at her blog. While you're there be sure to pick up her Beach Glass kit. It's absolutely wonderful! Leave her some luvs. She's been having some difficulties with her website and some unwanted Pop-up action so head on over there and let her know we love her no matter what!

First a Few Things, Then Coffee Break - Day Five

I've been tagged by http://creationsbyjessa.blogspot.com/. How cool is that. It's so much fun, however It may take me a bit to figure out 7 random/weird things about myself that I haven't already shared. But, here goes:

I work for a healthcare company who delivers oxygen and supplies to Veterans.

I look at freebies differently now that I've started to design my own elements. Now instead of saying "that's so cute" I say "I wonder if I could do that" or "how'd they do that".

I use photoshop 6.0, It's ancient and if anyone wants to donate CS2 or CS3 to me, that would be awesome.

I have a CDL drivers licsense and I used to drive big Coca Cola trucks. That job was so much fun.

Truthfully, blinkies give me headaches and I've always hated so much flashy-ness on websites, signatures and blogs.. but for some reason, lately, I've grown to like them just a little bit more.

I love to just explore and drive aimlessly around to see new things. However, with gas prices the way they've been I've had to cut back on my adventures. BTW, I never get lost, I just go on little adventures. :)

I try to ride my bike to work at least 3 days a week. I've really been slacking on that though.

It's amazing the lack of time that I have when I'm trying desperately to use my spare time to put together something creative like this new kit of mine. It seems that I start working on something and the next thing I know, it's 4 hours later! Sheesh! Anyway, I'm sure you all remember the little sneak peak I put together for you a few days ago. Okay, so for those of you who don't really know me, I am a HUGE coffee junkie. Coffee in the morning, coffee in the afternoon and sometimes coffee before bed. Coffee with pie, coffee reading the newspaper, coffee while I'm working, coffee while I'm scrappin. Usually, there's always a cup in my hand. So, what does that mean for you? Kristin at Digi Delights - Kristin here, entered one of the design contests over at Scrap Orchard, and I fell in "love at first site". I just absolutely love her great wonderful stuff, and I am glad she's finally got her beautiful work on the market now. Check out her stuff over at Plain Digital Wrapper Way to go girl! Keep up that hard work! Plus, I just like to pop in and see what she has to say. She's probably getting tired of me buggin her because I just tagged her not so long ago.

Vicki - A Work in Progress - This is another great blogger that I like to have a look at and see what new things she's come up with. I love her great new kits and all the hard work that she puts into making them. On top of that, she just gives them away for free! How spectacular! She's always got something to say and I'm glad she shares with us. I was just over at her blog today, and read about how someone has re-posted some of her work on RapidShare. That is so NOT cool! Ginger Scraps - I know that this girl gave me the award in the first place, and I know that she's been given the award already (duh, that's how I got it from her, haha) But I really think that her blog is fabulous. She puts in so much work for us every day, I just want to send as many people over to her blog as I can (she's got a great little tracker on her blog, I think my blog is only responsible for about 10 clicks so far) Check out her wonderful freebie blog, and definitely visit on Monday's and have a look at her scrap talent. She's great!

Melanie's Pixie Haven - Okay, ya got me, the biggest reason that I visit Melanie's blog is to listen to her great Playlist. I LOVE the music she's got playing at her site and I usually have it going everyday while I'm working on my scrappy stuff. But, that's not the only reason. She's usually got some great story of the day, some news on something spectacular, and sometimes a little freebie to get you going. Don't forget to head over to the Speed Scrap next week. She'll be hosting it down at Scrap Matters. I haven't made it to one yet, but hopefully I'll make this one!

Simply Yin - When I need some inspiration, I head on over to Simply Yin and take a gander at her great layouts. She offers a lot of templates which use bundles and bundles of photo's. Great for people who always take too many pictures then have no where to put them. The simplicity of her blog is the perfect touch!

How 'bout Some Kanji?!

I'm a real big fan of Japanese and Chinese writing so I thought I'd put together some kanji acrylics for you. These ones are see-through so you can change colors and patterns easily. I've also added a pink gel set and a cute sticker like effect.

So everyone, what did you think of my blinkie? Not too shabby! Did you all have a great holiday? We sure did. Spent most of the day just enjoying the extra time with the family. Bend has a great fireworks show that they set off from the butte in the sort of middle of town. Got to see a bit of that, Baby Madison just LOVED all the bright lights. She got a real kick out of her first Fourth of July!

Had to Snatch the Name Before Someone Else Did

Hi all! If you haven't noticed already, I've added a little blog feed there on top for Priddy Sweet Scraps. I've decided to move my blog. But, don't worry, Jillian Rose Designs will still be home to my digital work. I just fell for "Priddy Sweet" and wanted to snatch it before someone else did!

There you will find updates on Baby Madison, New Layouts, Contests I've entered (unless it's a design contest, that'll be here) and all the fun and interesting stuff going on in the wonderful life of Jillian Rose.

Leaving for the Weekend

The family and I are going on a little vacation this weekend, so I made a little alpha to share with everyone since I won't be around for a few days. What's weird though, is that the seperate .png files look a lot more glittery then the previews, so I'm not sure what happened in the transition, but I hope you like it. I actually took the time to seperate the letters this time and I added some symbols and numbers too. Here's a little peak:

I had this great idea! Puzzle Pieces made of glass! What do you think? I'm not sure what use they'll be yet, but that's okay. I started out with an alpha, which i'll probably have done sometime next week (unless I get more time this week to work on it), then decided to take a break and throw these guys together. There's four, each in a different color and the background is not included. Go ahead and leave a comment and link to any LO's you include these in. That would be awesome!! I've Been Tagged

Seven completely random things about me:

I used to just love that japanese animation called anime, I would sit on my couch and watch it for hours.
My favorite movie is "My Father the Hero".
I love to take pictures in my spare time, or at work, or while i'm supose to be doing housework.
I've only been scrapping since March '08.
I hate peas.
I love strawberries.
And, last but not least, when I was younger (I'm 25 now) I thought scrapbooking was 'stupid' and a 'waste of time', so I never got into it. Now you can't keep me away from the stuff.

Scrap Outside the Box Challenges

Well, I've pretty much finished up all the challenges that I'm going to to at RAK Scraps so I've moved on to Scrap Outside The Box. So far i've gotten 4 challenges done and I still have 10 to go. That's assuming that they have all the challenges up for June.

The first page I did was the "Tricks of the trade" challenge, and it introduced Scallops. Here is the page that I did for that one:

I really liked how it turned out. Next time i think i'll use a darker background behind the photo because the crib bars and paper kind of run into each other and there isn't any definition there.

The next page that I put together was for the color challenge. I used a template by Pure Scraps for the colors then added some nature around it:

I don't like how this LO turned out at all. I really didn't have much motivation for this page and sort of just threw some stuff together.

Next, I did a page for the Fab-4 challenge. We were given 4 different elements to use (cardboard, quote, color swatch, template) and were asked to use at least one. I chose to use the cardboard element and the quote. Here is the page:

This one turned out pretty good and I'm pretty happy with it for the most part. The last page that I did today was for the "Do it like me" scraplift challenge.

There is mine and here is the original:I try not to scraplift too close to the original (with the exception of LO's that I just absolutly LOVE) so I went with round frames instead of the square like the original.

That's all that I've done for now. Hopefully I can get most of them done this next week so that I can move on to one of the other sites for more challenges!

What's Happening?!

Hey all! Sorry I haven't been spending a whole lot of time around here. It's been super busy lately. I do have a few extra minutes to put together a little update on what I've been working on so far this month.

6 days into the month and I've already been working on some RAK Scraps challenges. They are featuring 2 pretty great designers this month and I've already put together my LO's using their Newsletter mini kits. How it works: You sign up at RAK, download the Newsletter, grab the freebies, and take the challenge. Last month they featured Betsy Tuma and I actually won the newsletter challenge using her kit with this page:

It was pretty awesome and they gave me a $10 GC for her store which I've already used and recieved a couple great kits from her. I haven't had a chance to use them yet though.

Here's a peek at the mini's and my LO's from the designers this month:

First is Designs by Shelle, her mini is called 'A Little Birdie Told me'. I thought is was extremely cute and I just love the colors.

She is also hosting a sketch challenge. I've started my page but haven't finished it yet. You can check my RAK Gallery or the Designs by Shelle RAK gallery later today if you want to see what I did with that.

The second featured designer is Beth Rimmer and her mini "Night and Day". Truthfully, I had a hard time with her kit. I absolutely LOVE black and white though and in her challenge she told us to add a little color, so I did. Here's a preview:

That's it for the designers this month. I've also done some pages for a few of the other challenges.

This one was for the elements challenge. You had to use one of the flowers that were offered by

Tammy Bunch and her 'Endless Love" kit, A Bracket frame and some RicRac. For a bonus, some charms were included also.

Next, was a scraplift challenge. They featured one of the scrappers, Angie AKA MooMoosMommy, and you had to choose one of her pages and scraplift it. I chose to lift one of her ABC pages. "Z for Zoomer":

I really liked how she made the photo into blocks. I wish I had a picture of baby Madison like that. It's a very sweet picture. I also really liked the simplicity of this page. Plus, it made me want to start working on my own ABC book for Maddie. I haven't started on that yet, but it's closer to the top of the things to do list.

This was a color challenge LO. What was great about this one, was that I had the perfect kit to work with for the colors and I didn't have to manipulate it much. It was called 'Spring Swing' by Sarah Belle.

The last page I've made so far was for the sketch challenge. I didn't follow the sketch to a "T" on this one but I think it turned out very nice. I inspired MooMoosMommy to scraplift me because of my quote which reads:

Well, I think that's it so far this month. I finally got the "SOsunny" kits from Scrap Orchard and Sunshine Studios. I have yet to use them though. Maybe this weekend. Baby Madison is with her grandparents till Saturday evening so between cleaning the house and sitting on my bum, I should be able to get a few more pages done and use some of those kits that I've gotten recently.

Anyway, with that all said and done, i've been hangin out at Sunshine Studios and Scrap Orchard. Trying to get that fancy "So SUNny" kit that everyone's been ranting and raving about. It's great, i'm halfway done.. Scrap orchard is either way over loaded with people or their site needs some major reconstruction.. It takes 20 minutes for a page to load and i've been working on the hunt for about an hour now and i've gotten 3 clues.. sheesh..

Guess i'll just have to be patient.

A couple Layouts

Just wanted to show off some more LO's I put together today. The first one is called "Beautiful" and it was made with a template by C. Schneider which I got from the Sweet Shoppe cookie cutter challenge. I used the Happy Birthday collab by Choukette, Tinette, Gwenn, New life dreams, Sylvie and nini-lolo. I like how this is just a simple collection of colors. There's plenty of room for journalling (I'm just not a big journaler).

Another page that I put together was a piece for The Sweet shoppe's recipe challenge. I went in thinking i'd have to find some food to scrap about and came out thankful that that is not how the sweet shoppe works. All you have to do is use specific elements for your page. This one had to include a plain paper, 3 photos, and some way of hanging them. (Credits for this page: frame by mimilou, bar by digiscrap, purple hangers and paper from RAK mega, other hangers by ninilolo). I didn't use a template for this one, and to me,
I can really tell. It just doesn't seem as organized or as well thought out, yet it still took me forever to put it together. Just another example of me needing to work on my scrapping skills. Or, I may just need to lower my high standards and expectations of myself.

Isn't she just the cuttest thing ever? Baby Madison is just so darn perfect! I love taking pictures of her. I have even edited a few of her photos. Maybe I'll post about those sometime this week if I get the chance.

Relaxation Sunday

Sassy Pixie posted up a template today on Cafe Mom, and since this is Sunday and I don't want to do any housework. I decided I would make it a scrapping day. So, I downloaded the great template (shown to the left there) and worked a little magic.

I came up with a little somethin' somethin', that i thought turned out okay. The papers aren't really matching up for me and something seems to be a little off. Just proves once again that even though i'm a fish (pisces, get it?) i'm not very creative AT ALL. With no further ado, I give you my take on the challenge.

This was also posted at Scrap Matters for the Queen of scrap. I'm only up to 26 LO's and there are many ladies who have reached 50, 60, even 70+ pages. There's absolutely no way that I'm gonna get that many. First of all, i'm out of cute pictures. I've pretty much scrapped everything. You can go check out my mom2maddie gallery at SM if you like. It'll prove that pretty much every page I have up there are using the same pictures.

I think i've done a few more pages in the last couple of days. Most of them have been templates because for some reason I can seem to come up with my own ideas lately. Creative block I guess. Oh well, what can ya do? Have a look at:

The cute little one with the tree was a cookie cutter layout for a challenge with The Sweet Shoppe. The top one was from Nice Crane.

These two turned out pretty good. That cat is just adorable (thank you alexeeva!). Well, i'm off to grab some more pretty freebies. For some reason, no matter how much harddrive i take up, i just can't get enough!

The Saturday Sunday Freebie List

I'm a little picky when it comes to the freebies that i'll chose to share with people. I want them to be the kinds of things that I like for myself. I don't download everything I see. I did that when I started and realized that there's just too much to chose from out there, and I don't have a hard drive big enough for everything. As you may have noticed, I try to offer a link to something free every day whether it be a template that i've used recently or just something that i've come across in search for that perfect element. You won't see 'crap', You won't see 'boring', and hopefully you won't see 'ugly'. However, everyone's taste is different. My trash may be someone elses treasure - as they say. I also try to stay away from the un-realistic type kits, however I do make an exception when it comes to doodles and drawings. I can't get enough of that stuff!

A Couple Designer Features

I have recently come across one great designer. I'm just completely in love with her stuff. She's currently in the middle of the "So you think you can design" competition at Scrap Orchard and she's offering some other kits on her webpage at Digi Delights and also in the gallery at Scrap Orchard. Don't forget to stop by and give support for her designs.

Also, check out Digi Delights for some cute cute cute cute cute kits.. Did I say they were cute? There's a preview of my favorite kit from her to the left called turtle. Those darn things are just precious. Hurry over to SO and grab the Love in Paris kit before it's no longer available, there's a preview to the right.

There is just so much detail with her kits, i'm suprised she gets so much accomplished in such little time. I'll be back a little bit later today with some LO's that i've made with her kits. I think showing them off like that really gives you an idea of what can be done with their hard work. What do you think?

Using Templates

What exactly is a template? In the scrapbooking world they look a little something like the image that you see to the left. A black, white and grey Drawing or Sketch that gives you an idea of where to place pictures and elements. The great thing about these is that you can make them more of your own instead of using a Quick Page that is already done for you. Another great thing is that you don't have to follow the design to a 't'. Usually you can download templates in a .psd format and most of layers are there and ready for you.

{Quick photoshop tip: Try placing a photo or paper above one of the layers and type contol+alt+G and see what happens. This will be especially helpful when trying to put pictures into text. Don't believe me? Check back later this week and see for yourself}

Here is the layout that I made using this template. As you can see I didn't make any changes to the layout at all. I even used the frames that were provided.

I really liked how this layout was able to tell a story with the placement of photos and the strips at the bottom followed the theme because they could be thought of as a row of books.

Newbie Monday

You know what's great? When other people spend there time collecting all the new freebies and posting them on their blogs. Man does it save me a lot of time. I admit, i'll probably be doing the same thing with mine but for right now i'm going to feature a new blogger doing just that.

Alright then, lets get started.

Everyone, i'd like you to meet Ginger at Ginger Scraps.. (totally reminds me of snaps.. love those things). You can check out her Blog HERE.

You are all probably wondering why I chose this specific blogger to feature on this day. Well, first i heard about her new blog at Cafe Mom by her sister a couple days ago. Second, it's the only new blog i've seen since i decided to feature a Newbie. And lastly, just because! (don't you just love that answer, i can't wait till my daughter asks me why so I can finally tell her because I said so, my mom did it to me all the time. haha)

Not only is this girl a great Freebie Hunter but I love her scrapper style too. Here's one of her LO's that tells you a little about her.

What is a QP?

In this day and age everyone has learned to take shortcuts in every way possible. When it comes to scrapbooking, one way is called Quick Pages or QP's as they are so often refered to. Basically, a designer will use one of there new kits to make a page that all you have to do is plop in some pictures, add some text and the page is done. A lot of the time they do this to promote new kits they've made, sometimes they'll freebie out an add-on or mini kit that way they can tempt you to buy the whole thing.

On today's "Idea Day" i'll be featuring 2 QP's that I really liked, i'll attemt at telling you why I liked them, and show you how easy it is to get to the finished product.

To start with, here's the link to Ellie Lash Designs for the first QP HERE

I just loved how simple this LO was (LO meaning Layout). Reminded me of a Hawiian vacation or something. But, since i've never been there, i couldn't use this LO for that. However, this now outfit of Baby Madison seemed right for the space.

To get to this finished product with your own photos:

1. Open Photoshop
2. Open QP
3 Open Photo
4 Drag photo to QP
5. In the layers Pallet, make sure your photo is below the QP.
6. Arrange photo in the correct place to show through the frame
7. type some text
8. save and you're done.

Okay, okay, so i'm not very good at giving directions. But, i think you get the point on how easy this is to do, and how much it really shortcuts making an LO. I usually spend at least an hour on each page that I make from scratch. This QP took me about 10 minutes with most of that time being spent on finding the right picture to use.

The second QP for today was made by Ameliescrap, her delightful kit and other QP's were found at Digitalscrapdepot.com, however it seems she's moved her blog and the QP link I had is no longer available.

Scraplifting

In other words. It's a nice way of telling someone you are going to copy their work. Sometimes you just use a few of their ideas, "omg i just LOVE how you did" this or that... Other times it's a complete copy right down to the buttons. It's like using a quick page that hasn't already been made for you. I admit, i've done this, in fact, i just did it yesterday. Here it is:

As you can see, aside from not using the same kit, it looks almost exactly the same. Another one I made yesturday had the same idea, but it's not so close to the exact same thing:
